RV Camping at Bannister RV Park in Clayton, North Carolina

There aren’t many RV parks in the Raleigh area, and the ones close to the city tend to stay full. I called Bannister a few times over several weeks before a spot finally opened up. When it did, we booked by phone, paid by check, and pulled in for what ended up being two full months—all of August and September.

We were getting our house completely gutted and remodeled before the baby came, and needed somewhere to land. I was very pregnant, and having Big WakeMed just 18 mins away made a real difference in where we were willing to stay. Bannister checked that box without us having to compromise on anything else.

Site 42A at Bannister RV Park: What to Expect

The park is divided into an Upper and Lower Section, with good spacing between sites throughout. Site 42A sits in the Lower Section on the far left edge. It has a large grassy area right off the concrete pad and a big tree overhead that kept it shaded through the heat of late summer. We spent a lot of time out there—picnic blanket down, music on. There were berry bushes behind the site, and at night you could see fireflies. Frankie had plenty of room to roam.

Garbage pickup works like it does at home—you bring your can to the end of the pad on pickup day.

All sites have 50 amp service. We ran 30 amp with a dog bone adapter, which worked fine—bring a reducer if your rig runs 30 amp. Monthly rates include up to $100 of electric, with water, sewer, and trash covered too.

The park has paved roads throughout, large concrete pads, and full hookups on every site. It’s clean and well-maintained—the owners clearly put real effort into keeping it that way, and it shows.

There’s no WiFi or cable, but the park sits about a mile from the TV towers, so an antenna gets you multiple HD channels. Our T-Mobile and Verizon hotspots both worked well, and Spectrum is an option if you’re there long enough to want a permanent setup. Having an actual street address meant deliveries came straight to the site—Amazon, groceries, whatever—and there are mailboxes on site for regular mail. Most people staying at Bannister are there long-term, and you feel it. Everyone we met was neighborly, friendly, and genuinely helpful. Evenings we’d end up on the porch with neighbors, talking until it was time to go to sleep. Dogs are welcome on leash—the park has breed restrictions, so call ahead to confirm.

Clayton and What’s Nearby

Within about a five-minute drive there’s a shopping center with a Lowe’s Foods where we did most of our grocery shopping, plus a lot of fast casual restaurants. Also, Lowe’s Foods also has a beer and wine bar inside, complete with music and dancing? It’s not what you expect from a grocery store. Walmart is 3.5 miles out. Washland Laundry is a few minutes away and has impeccably clean machines—they do wash and fold too. Petsense is right there too, in the same area near the Publix shopping center on Town Centre Boulevard.

If you’re looking for leisure activities: Pine Hollow Golf Club is about a fifteen-minute walk—it’s a public course. Clemmons Educational State Forest is about a twelve-minute walk, with well-maintained trails. Also, there’s a shopping center with all the big box stores just about 5.5 miles away.

Downtown Clayton is about ten minutes away and worth an afternoon. On weekends there’s a farmers market, festivals and events. There are good coffee shops and ice cream spots within walking distance of each other, too!

WakeMed Garner is 6.7 miles. Downtown Raleigh is 14 miles. The NC Farmers Market is 14.7 miles, and the NC State Fairgrounds are about 22 miles.
